Sounds exciting Gordon!
Do you know roughly when I could get in touch with you again? If ever? 🙂

Hi Axel, I wrote this twenty years ago, and currently I am living and working 8,500 kilometers away from my library, so I am sorry, but I am not in a position to answer your question at the moment.

Humans process sounds in bytes about 1/20 of a second long, whereas birds discriminate up to 1/200 of a second”

Where did you get this info? This aspect is fascinating but I can’t find scientific papers analysing it. Thanks

Sort of, there is an old study showing that loud, or continuous, noise can cause birds to go deaf (https://sci-hub.se/10.1016/j.heares.2019.107859), however in the 1990s it was discovered that birds can regenerate auditory hair cells (as can amphibians and reptiles – but not mammals), so this type of damage is not permanent in birds, see https://www.pnas.org/content/97/22/11714/ – I do not know of any studies focused particularly on airports (or other industrial noise) and birds, however that does not mean it does not exist.

How do some birds live at and visit airports? Would a loud train going by (80-90 decibels) cause damage to the ear of a bird?

Different species have different levels of intelligence, so how much they associate your call with the feeding will vary. Have you read the page on bird intelligence Intelligence in birds.

The feeders are visited by nuthatches, bluejays, cardinals, juncos and chickadees. When I enter the forest I make the same repetitive call to the birds to let them know I am there. Question: can any of the birds I mentioned remember my call and for how long (days weeks),

I know that the bluejays remember my car and I think they know my face .

Thanks
